All about Ultrasun, and some important spf basics. Protecting our skin from sun damage and premature ageing is such a crucial step. I can guarantee you won’t regret it. Ultrasun are Swiss made and offer full spectrum protection. It’s time to stop leaving the house without spf.

Spf is a skincare must have, and a good one protects your skin from more than just a potential sunburn. Trust me when I say prevention is the best method. Don’t start using spf after a scare. Look after your skin now and you won’t regret it. If you were looking for your push to use spf, this is it!

Ultrasun is a brand that I have tried a limited amount in the past but I was excited to put some more of their products to the test. As I have sensitive and dry skin, and it can be hard to find an spf that works perfectly for me. I wear spf daily, as I encourage you too. I couldn’t wait to incorporate Ultrasun into my routine.

An Intro to Ultrasun

Ultrasun is advanced Swiss suncare. Their products are full spectrum protection, UVA + UVB and blue light. They are also Eco Sunpass approved. Which is an aquatic environmental accreditation.

I did some research on this and to be awarded this, it means their formulas cannot be not harmful or toxic to a range of aquatic life. You can read more about this here if you’re interested. 

Ultrasun is water resistant, fragrance and mineral oil free. Most of the range is vegan friendly (A small few contain beeswax) and all are cruelty free.

Protection for Allergy Suffers

What sets Ultrasun apart from other spf’s, is their carefully considered formulas. When I saw ‘help to prevent sun allergies’ on their box, I got really excited. I get hives from extreme temperatures, and rashes in the heat. Finding a range that can improve this for me is a massive win and something I don’t see a lot from other brands. I noticed an improvement from my first application.

When to use an spf 

Spf should be the last step in your morning routine. Once your mosituriser has absorbed, It’s time for an spf. You can find two-in-one products, personally I believe they are more effective separately but I can’t blame anyone for wanting something easier. It is also important to note that although spf is often a cream, it is not a replacement to a moisturiser.

You may also see spf within a foundation. I am less of a fan of an spf in a foundation as they tend to cause flashback (a white appearance to the skin in flash photography) and are often a much lower level of protection. Spf 10 is doing very little for you.

My advice, use a separate spf. Every morning, even when it’s wet and cold outside. Make sure what you pick is full spectrum protection, and look after your skin. It’s much easier to protect it now, then treat it for sun damage later.

Full spectrum protection

This is the term you want to familiarise yourself with. Board (or full) spectrum, or UVA + UVB is what to look out for when buying an spf. You need protection from both to ensure you’re fully protecting your skin.

UVB – Skin Damage = Potential skin cancer

UVA – Skin elasticity = Premature aging

Chemical (Synthetic) Vs Mineral (Physical)

You will commonly see two types of spf. Chemical (synthetic) or mineral (physical). One isn’t better than the other, they both work in different ways. However, you may favour one formula over another. 

Mineral (Physical): Zinc Oxide – Titanium Dioxide 

How it works: Absorbs and reflects uv rays

Chemical (Synthetic): There are a lot more varieties of chemical (synthetic) sunscreens. So if you can’t see either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in the ingredient list you can assume it’s a chemical (synthetic) formula. 

How it works: Converts uv rays and ‘de-actives’ them

Why does this matter?

You may find from testing that your skin reacts better to one over the other. Personally, as I have sensitive skin, I find mineral (physical) spf’s work better for me. But this isn’t a catch all, and I would still encourage you to test every formula independently.

Ultrasun Spf 30 Body Mineral | £28

The Ultrasun spf 30 for body (Link to Skincity) has done everything I need it too. It is a thicker more traditional sunscreen texture but I don’t find it takes long to apply. I actually quite like that you can see where you have applied before it completely absorbs. Making sure no where is missed. As I mentioned in an earlier paragraph, I have really noticed the benefits of spf for ultra sensitive skin like mine. I haven’t had any negative reaction to this and it has actually improved my sun allergies too.

Apply everywhere your skin is on show and throughout the day if needed. This has been great to protect my skin from the sun and keep it comfortable. I would definitely repurchase.

Ultrasun Spf 50 Face Fluid | £28

The Ultrasun Spf 50 Face Fluid (Link to Lookfantastic) is lighter and quicker to absorb then the cream version below. The texture actually reminds me a lot of La Roche Posay Anthelios (Link to Lookfantastic). I have been using this every morning after moisturising. I do find this makes me look a bit shiny throughout the day, but with my dry skin, I consider this a bonus. As I haven’t been wearing foundation since lockdown began, especially since face covering was mandated, I can’t share how this works underneath foundation.

Texture wise, I don’t think even with the thinner lighter formula, you can get away full from that sticky feeling. That’s just part of a decent spf. It sticks to your skin. As this is a fluid formula, it’s less tacky and quicker to absorb than the cream version. 

I enjoy this spf, its high coverage and doesn’t break me out (as long as you double cleanse) As I’m not planning to start wearing foundation again for awhile, it’s meeting all my needs so far. I would be interested to see how it reacts in the future but for now it’s really working well to protect my skin.

Ultrasun spf 30 Face | £22

The Ultrasun Spf 30 face (Link to Lookfantastic) is a thicker formula then the face fluid. More akin to the Ultrasun body spf. It feels more like a ‘beach spf’ I personally prefer the Ultrasun spf 50 Face fluid overall. Better protection, texture and higher UVA absorbance. So if you can swing it, I think it’s worth the extra few pounds to invest in the 50.

The spf 30 offers good protection and the benefits of being water resistant, fragrance free and helping to prevent sun allergies. My husband has adopted it into his routine so I’m happy he is using a spf, as that’s always been a challenge. So far no complaints form him so all is good.

Ultrasun spf 30 Lip Protection & Care | £6

I really love the Ultrasun spf 30 lip balm (Link to Skincity). Spf lip balm’s are few and far between. As the skin on your lips is delicate and thin, protection is a must. This feels and apply’s like a standard stick lip balm, (think Nivea) but with that all important added protection.

If you like to keep a lip balm in your bag, I think making the swap to one that offers spf protection is a great idea. I am more likely to reapply this throughout the day, so I know I can really protect my lips. It’s nourishing and sinks in offering comfortable care.
