I have never really found a hair care routine that was absolutely perfect for my hair in every way. Now I realise that’s because what I have been wishing for all along, is a completely custom product that meets my unique hair needs. Enter Function of Beauty.

Why Customise

Function of Beauty is a brand I have been wanting to try for quite a while. There is something so intriguing about a completely custom routine. If done right, you may never have to shop the market again. My hair is often the last priority in my beauty routine. Yet it’s something that not only takes up a lot of my time, but unsurprisingly, is an area I’m not really happy with. I was so excited to see if Function of Beauty would really make a difference to my hair, and my relationship with it.

They have a clean, no nasty’s list of ingredients in all of their products; free from sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, gluten, and always vegan and cruelty-free. Everything I want to hear when shopping for hair care.

How it works

In order to get your perfect routine, there is a short two minute survey on the Function of Beauty website. To identify your hair type, needs and wants. No two formulas are alike but for reference I choose:

• Profile (hair type): Straight + Medium + Normal
• Goals: Anti frizz + Shine + Strengthen + Straighten + Volumise
• Fragrance: Peach

For the shampoo and condition you can pick a colour too, I choose the pastel blue. There is also an option to pick no-fragrance or no-colour, which is a fantastic.

Once you have finished the survey, your unique profile can be applied to any of the available products. Meaning it’s made just for you and what your hair needs. Such a brilliant concept and so quick to do. In just a few minutes my unique formula was ready to be made!

We are all different, and Function of Beauty really celebrates that. There are over 54 trillion possible formulations!

What Function of Beauty are doing is totally unique, and in my opinion pure genius. I have had such a good experience with the brand, from the ordering process to the delivery of the products. It’s every aspect that makes me love them.

Made in the U.S.A, my products took about 10 working days to arrive after the order went through. Not bad as it was coming from the other side the world. Everything was securely packaged in a very nicely engineered box that wasn’t over packaged, either which is such a pet peeve of mine. Best of all there was no duties to pay.

If you don’t want to have to worry about reordering, they have a subscription service too. Which I’m tempted by myself.

Did someone say stickers?

I don’t care how old you are, stickers are great and enjoyable always. Function of Beauty comes with a few sheets of adorable stickers to help further customise your products. I felt like a kid in a candy store, sticking these on to my bottles to make them even cuter. If you have a few people in your household and don’t want a mix up, the stickers with help with identifying your product.

Okay now you’re clued up on how it all works, let’s talk about the products, including the two new launches!

Custom Shampoo 8oz | £25

It’s tricky to review a custom product as this formula is just for me. Still to jump ahead, I have been loving the Custom Shampoo. The formula is really thick but lathers easily, I find about three pumps is perfect for my hair. Bear-in-mind, my hair is very long and pretty thick, so I honestly think one or two pumps would suit most. Better yet, you can get it in a bigger size so you won’t run out so fast. They initially come with caps, but you can swap to the provided pumps if you prefer. I find it a lot easier with a pump, to ensure I don’t use so much, so this was a great addition.

It’s easy to rinse and work through my hair, creating a lot of lovely lather to ensure every part of my hair is clean. I noticed improvements from day one, and have continued too over the course of the three weeks I have been using this. I like to wash my hair every other day, but honestly I could go longer between washes, as my hair hasn’t been looking flat as quickly.

This shampoo is just as fantastic as I hoped it would be. Having tried a few higher-end shampoo’s in my time, it’s no surprised that this custom formula has been working better for my hair then any of the others.

Custom Conditioner 8oz | £25

Paring beautifully like cheese and wine, you can’t have a great shampoo without a great conditioner. The Custom Conditioner has all the amazing custom qualities of my shampoo, with more focus on protecting and nourishing the hair. As a result I focus this on the ends of my hair, and keep it on for a few minutes to allow the fab formula to get to work. This glides through my hair making it feel really silky. I have noticed such an improvement in the end of my hair, which are often prone to splitting.

I also feel like this is the product that has been making the biggest impact on how my hair drys. Before it would often dry with an annoying kink in the middle, but it’s not only quicker to dry my hair now, it drys much straighter too. A real bonus, as it means I have to use less heat on my hair.

Conditioner is a staple product for me, as I’m sure it is for you too. I do find a real difference in the quality and formula of the Function of Beauty conditioner. Nourishing and fortifying the hair, rather than just coating it. This formula has been a dream for keeping my hair manageable and maintaining its strength and shine.

*NEW* Custom Hair Serum 3oz | £19

The Custom Hair Serum is one of two new launches by Function of Beauty and it’s a great addition to the line. There are a few ways you can use this, I like to apply a few pumps to the mid lengths and ends of my hair when it’s damp. If preferred you can also use this more as a styling product on dry hair, just avoid your roots.

The oil is really nice and thick, and coats my hair without making it feel greasy or sticky. I love how sleek and glossy this makes my hair look. Hair oils are one of my favourite styling products, and this hair serum has really made my hair feel more manageable, silky and shiny.

As it’s custom, there are some consistent ingredients which I have listed below but also the added boost of your individual hair goals. As I picked the peach scent this also smells peachy!

• Argan oil to combat frizz
• Jojoba oil to nourish and smooth
• Annatto oil protect from damage
• Sunflower oil to add shine

I think the Custom Hair Serum is a beautiful product, it gives my hair glamour and a silky shine. Such a gorgeous product that I have loved adding to my blow drying routine. I would liken it to others but it really is totally unique; in form, texture and finish. I think the price point is amazing too, for a fully customised product. Definitely something I would repurchase when the time came. It’s amazing how a small pump of oil can do wonders for my hair.

*NEW* Custom Hair Mask 7.5oz | £19

A good hair mask, much like a face mask is a product that rolls up its sleeves and gets to work to really sort out your hair concerns. Using a hair mask once a week or fortnight, can really make a massive change to your hairs behaviour and appearance over time.

The new Function of Beauty Custom Hair Mask just like everything discussed is, say it with me now… custom! But just like the Hair Serum there are some core ingredients that benefit all:

• Argan oil to combat frizz
• Japanese sake to make hair soft and smooth
• Jojaba ester oil to reduce breakage and frizz

This mask has made the biggest difference to how manageable my hair is. My hair is notoriously stubborn, curling and high ponytails where just near impossible before I starting using this. As my hair just wanted to do its own thing, and didn’t care that I looked like a scarecrow most of the time. It just moves and behaves so differently now, and I can directly attribute it to this mask. As I didn’t pick ‘soft’ as one of my key hair goals. I don’t feel like my hair is any softer (unsurprisingly), but it is a lot sleeker. Which has just made my life so much easier when getting ready.

I have been using this once a week and leave it on for about 10-15 minutes while in the shower. If I had one negative about this mask. It’s that I feel like I do loose quite a bit of hair when I use this. It could be because I’m using a comb in the shower. Where before I just use my hands to comb the product through. Still I love this quick and conditioning hair mask and the positives way out-way the one negative.

Final Thoughts

My hair is so stubborn but since using Function of Beauty I have noticed improvements week on week. The ends of my hair look a lot healthier, which I think is a benefit from all the products combined. My hair is still frizzy, I think that’s the only thing I haven’t seen a total change in. I have extreme frizz caused my humidity, so a line of hair care can only do so much, right? My hair is a lot more manageable, honestly it feels like someone else’s. It feels strong, looks shiny and sleek, and for the first time in a long time, is behaving. I’m really impressed with Function of Beauty. I would consider tinkering with my formula next time, just to try some of the other hair goals but otherwise I can’t fault it.

Function of Beauty have made hair care a much less taxing process, and brought some really fantastic products to the market. There is one other product in the line which I have yet to try and that is the Custom Leave In Treatment. The bottom line, would I recommend you try them? 100% yes. You won’t be disappointed.
