Affordable Serums and Primers. Part 1
We all know and love Revolution makeup; they are affordable, great quality and bang-on trend. I was so excited to see they have ventured into skincare as well. Bringing something new to our highstreet. After putting these to the test for the past two months, here is the full load down on these products.

I am a firm believer that it pays to invest in quality skincare products, my skin always thanks me for it. That being said, quality doesn’t always mean expensive and I love finding products that work at any budget.
For reference, my skin type is dry/sensitive and occasionally blemish prone.
Enter Revolution Skincare
Revolution Skincare is cruelty free and vegan. Not only are they an affordable brand but they have released some really exciting products. For example their CBD oil is under £10. This ingredient is getting a lot of buzz lately, making it a great way to try it and not having to break the bank. What I really love about the line, is that you can really see what works for your skin at a really reasonable price point.
They have since released Essence Sprays within the line too. Click here to read my post if you missed it.
What about The Ordinary?
When I first saw these, my mind jumped straight to the Ordinary line. Not only because they use similar pipette bottles but the convention of the names as well. I’m a big fan of The Ordinary, I think they changed the game for affordable skincare and offer no nonsense products that work. I can see why Revolution have chosen to do something in a similar vein. One thing I would say in Revolution’s favour, is I think the line doesn’t need as much homework. They are a little clearer about how the products can be used and what they do. Honestly, I feel The Ordinary and Revolution Skincare would appeal to two different audiences. Now this review isn’t about The Ordinary but I couldn’t not mention the similarities in the two lines.
The Primers
Let’s start with the primers. I would categories these, as makeup products with skincare benefits. The reason for this is, both products contain shimmer and ingredients that help the skin look more radiant and glowing. Skincare with shimmer in it, is just a no-no for me, as it’s a potential irritant. However, I’m very partial to luminous primers, which I feel both of these are. That’s why I think they are more suited and work better in the makeup category. It’s a different format for me then many of my primers, but I’m glad I gave them a chance, because they have been working well for my dry skin as a first step to my base.
Gold Elixir Rosehip Seed Oil | £9.99
First up we have the Gold Elixir Rosehip Seed Oil. Perfect for dry or combination skin. I use a few drops before applying makeup. As this is an oil, you can overdo it, so I find 4-5 drops the perfect amount. This gives my skin a healthy youthful glow, without feeling greasy. It sinks in quickly and although you can see the gold flecks in the bottle, I was surprised to note they don’t really show up on the skin.
I’m a big fan of rosehip oil, it can have amazing effects on the skin. From everything to; hydration, combating free radicals and reducing scars, fine lines and pigmentation. The Gold Elixir is a blend of rosehip, so it doesn’t have a strong orange colour or the signature rosehip scent. This means you won’t get the full effect of rosehip but that’s not to say it isn’t contributing.
The Gold Elixir has a slight orange scent to it, which I do rather enjoy. Overall, I like this product. Used sparingly under makeup, it gives my skin the boost it needs. The rosehip blend gives it some added skincare benefits and the subtle gold flecks give my skin a healthy radiant base, to apply makeup too.
Superfruit Extract Antioxidant Serum & Primer | £9.99
Not only does it have mesmerizing rainbow packaging but the Superfruit Extract is rich in antioxidants with free radical fighting properties. It does have quite a sweet caramel scent, which I personally enjoy but others may find to sweet.
Unlike the Gold elixir, the Superfruit has a more traditional serum texture, I still control the amount of drops I use, as to many can inhibit the product from effectively sinking into the skin. Around 4-5 drops is perfect for me and avoids any potential stickiness. This quickly absorbs into the skin giving a touchable soft finish. I feel this primer would be great for most skin types, baring very sensitive skin.
The shimmer within Superfruit is more subtle and iridescent and does give a lovely luminous finish to the skin. I have enjoyed using this as a first step to my makeup. As it doesn’t contain dimethicone, it doesn’t leave my skin looking dry and do love the way my foundation applies over top. It gives me a healthy and luminous skin look, that I have been enjoying a lot.
The Serums
Before we can prime, serum is our best friend. My favourite thing about serums, is that you can tailor it to your needs. Everyone benefits from cleansing and moisturising but serum is the step when you really look at your individual skincare concerns and pick that signature product that is going to work for you. Serums can be a little overwhelming and sometimes it can take a while to really see results. As serums can often be the most expensive product in my routine, it’s fantastic to see so many options below the £10 mark. I don’t feel like any of these have made a dramatic difference to my skin but it’s still early days and like I said earlier in the post, it’s been a great way to test what works for me.
EGF Skin Conditioning Serum | £9.99
The EGF Skin Conditioning Serum is hydrating and conditioning. It contains EGF which is a plant based protein that occurs naturally in the skin. I must admit I had to do my homework on this one, as I hadn’t heard of it before. Essentially it helps your skin to repair itself quickly. Quite the little wonder ingredient.
This serum is another one for my fellow dry skin comrades. However, I can see this being great for combination skin too. It’s lightweight and doesn’t leave any residue to my skin. I have been testing it out in the mornings but you can use this twice a day. The smell isn’t great but it’s not too offence either. There isn’t to much to say about this one, It’s the one product I haven’t fully made my mind up about yet and I think that’s because I haven’t tried anything like it before. I’m planning to keep this one in my rotation a little longer, as it intrigued me to begin with and it still does now.
Gentle Quinoa Night Peeling Serum | £8.00
The Gentle Quinoa Night Peeling serum is the most proactive out of the products I have tried. The word peeling can be a little intimidating but don’t worry, all it means is that this serum helps lift away dead skin cells giving your skin a fresher appearance. It has a light non-oily texture, that quickly absorbs. I then follow this with a rich moisturiser to ensure my skin doesn’t become to dry.
I was cautious with this at first, as I have sensitive skin. I personally haven’t had any adverse reactions but I would do a patch test, as I can see this being potentially irritating. I don’t use this every night, as I find a few times a week to be enough to keep my skin looking refreshed while building a tolerance. This is a good product to start with if you are interested in trying chemical exfoliation.
2% Hyaluronic Acid plumping & Hydrating Solution | £6.00
As I have dry skin, I’m no stranger to Hyaluronic Acid. The Hyaluronic Acid plumping & Hydrating Solution is going to be your best friend if you are looking to give your skin that healthy bounce. It’s a difficult product to see working right away, as I find results can take a little longer to appear. Preserver, as in time I found this really help combat dehydrated skin.
Hyaluronic acid works as a magnet for your moisturisers. Helping hydrate the skin as much as possible. It’s not a product you can use solo, it’s really more of an extra boost. The light texture skins straight into my skin and you can’t really overdo it either. I notice when I don’t use this, as my skin doesn’t feel as soft. This is definitely one of my favourite products out of the ones I have tried as it really is a hero product for dry skin suffers.
Final Thoughts
We made it, there was so much to say about these products! Testing Revolution Skincare has been a really interesting experience for me. I have found some products I like and some products that I think will take a bit more time before I really see a difference in my skin. The fact that there are so many affordable and vegan products in this line, gives it really mass appeal. My favourites would be the Gold Elixir and the 2% Hyaluronic acid, as both are fantastic for my dry skin. I think if you are in the market for a skincare refresh, it’s a great place to start. They have very kindly sent me a few more products to put to the test so stay tuned for a new review in the next few months.

So exciting to see another affordable skincare brand and I love that they have some really interesting products like the primer/serum hybrids! The one that stood out for me the most was the Quinoa Night Peeling Serum since I know Kiehl’s has something similar that’s been on my wishlist for a while, but the price of this one is much more wallet-friendly! Thank you for sharing these with us!
