Eloping in New York City

On the 5th Feb 2018, my boyfriend of 9 years asked me to marry him. Now almost a year on, our wedding is getting incredibly close. With our special day on the horizon, I wanted to share a few of our hopes and plans.

I have thought about my wedding day so many times over the years. What my dress would look like, who would be there to celebrate with me and most importantly saying yes to the love of my life.

K and I have been together a long time, we starting dating when I was 17, so I feel like we have grown up together. We have talked about being married many times over the years but less about what our wedding would be like.

Luckily we had very similar thoughts about our wedding day, when the discussion really opened up. Eloping in New York just felt right to us and after a bit of researching, it felt like it was possible too.

Picking a Date

As we approach our 10 year anniversary, I always loved the idea of saying yes on the same day, as a way to start our new chapter. Our Anniversary is in May, so we only have a few months to go. The only downside is May can mean some unpredictable weather. I can’t spend time worrying about if it will rain, after all you can never guarantee sunshine, and it’s the date that matters most to us. So with that, the day was set.

Eloping

Eloping may seem like an unusual choice. In all honesty, I just can’t imagine having a big wedding. It’s not that I don’t love the idea, because truthfully I do, but we just knew it wasn’t right for us. When we thought about the idea of hoping on a plane and saying yes, it just felt perfect.

Location

The first place that came to mind was New York, I had my heart set on the idea so thankfully K agreed. I have been to America many times but New York remains at the top of my Bucket List. It may sound very risky to get married in a City you have never been too… I mean what if I hate it? But I just have always known I would love New York, Let’s hope I’m right!

I have always been a City girl at heart, tall building and the hustle and bustle of city life just makes me feel alive. I have grown up watching NY in TV and films and always felt connected to it. When I thought about saying yes, there was always a Skyscraper in the background.

As we got engaged in California, I also loved the idea of continuing our American journey by getting wed on the other side of the country. It gives a great excuse to return for a holiday!

Ceremony

When we started looking into locations within the City, there were a few great options. Brooklyn Bridge, Conservatory Gardens, One Word Observatory. The City was really our oyster. We settled on getting married in Central Park. The best of both worlds. Lush beautiful trees, the bridge and the city skyline in the background. You do have to apply for a permit to get married in Central Park, so once we settled on where to have our ceremony, it was time to piece everything else together.

Planning

I don’t think anyone would be surprised to hear, that weddings take a lot of planning. Even elopements! We took the easy route and decided to hire a wedding planner, who would be able to assist with the elements of the day. As we don’t know the lay of the land, we felt like this was a much smarter idea. Wedding planners don’t come cheap and you can totally plan everything yourself but I don’t regret enlisting some help. Other than turning up and wearing white, I was pretty clueless about all the little details that needed organising in order to make our day run smoothly.

Counting Down The Days!

There are still a few to-do’s on our list. I need to get my dress altered and we need to find a nice restaurant for a wedding dinner but most of the plans are set at this stage and it’s just time to start the count down. It’s crazy to think this year we will be tying the knot and eloping in New York, no matter what happens, I’m excited to marry the love of my life.

I’m so excited for you! This is all so lovely. I am still amazed about how much goes into an elopement. It sounds so simple at first but then the layers add on. I’m going to IG message you sometime because I am planning on doing something similar and not even sure where to start.

Planning for a wedding can be stressful but it’s also full of excitement and fun. Central Park sounds great, I’ve been there and I had the best time. I love NYC too, I couldn’t stop dreaming to go there again. Wishing you all the best, your inspo board looks awesome.
