Reinventing my bedroom with Poster Store

I’ve reinvented my space by creating an eye-catching gallery wall above my bed in my bedroom. Poster Store has a wide and beautiful selection of prints that have allowed me to create a completely personalised gallery wall to compliment my style. Their range of frames and posters really inspired this project. I’m excited to share how I created my new feature gallery wall in this post. With tips along the way if you are looking to spruce up your own space!

Finding the right space

I first identified a wall in my house that I felt would work well as a gallery space. For me this was above my bed. The wall was neutral and only had bedside lamps either side, so it felt quite bare. As the bed is the focal point of the room your eye is drawn to it when you enter. Therefore, I felt it was a great opportunity to create an eye-catching gallery wall that would make a statement but also add a cosy and lived in feel to to my bedroom.

When you enter a room, make a note of where your eye goes to first, is it above a big pieces of furniture like a sofa or bed? or is it a wall that looks bare and could comfortably house a gallery wall? A gallery wall should feel harmonious, with elements from each print or photo linking each other to create an overall colour palette that compliments the rest of the room.

Tip: Find the focal point of the room to begin planning a gallery wall.

Planning my Gallery Wall

Once I had identified the space, my next task was to measure the area from ceiling to my headboard and the space between my lamps. My advice is always measure twice! After that I began playing around with different sized prints within those parameters. There are two routes you can take when planning a gallery wall. Have a symmetrical layout or create a juxtaposed layout with different sized prints that come together to create a unique but pleasing shape.

Tip: Have the largest prints in the middle of your wall and go smaller further out, to create a pleasing shape or stick to one size in blocks of 2 or 3.

Get Inspired

I found the Poster Store Gallery Walls Inspiration section very helpful for planning. By looking at complimentary prints and different ways I could layout my gallery wall. This really helped me visualise my end result and give me confidence in my design.

Choosing my Layout

I wanted to create a layout that felt unique with different sized prints. To do this I started with taking small pieces of paper and cutting them down to mini versions of the sizes I was thinking to get a sense of scale. I then began by moving the pieces around until I had a layout that I was happy with. I mixed up the heights but tried to keep everything within a loose rectangle as this is the space I had to work with. By putting medium sized prints next to big prints and small prints next to medium sizes prints. I created a layout that felt organic but not jarring to the eye. I knew I wanted the largest print in the centre so by working with the left over space I was able to create a layout that included 7 prints in total across 4 sizes.

Tip: Create a mini version made from paper! move the cut pieces around to create a layout you like

Picking my Prints

Once I had my layout selected, It was the fun part! Picking my prints. My room is a soft rosy beige colour so I wanted to keep the prints neutral to compliment the paint. I also have accents of black in my room, so I felt black frames would be the best option to tie it all together. When I began looking for prints, I wanted them to have elements of black and neutral colours. To really make my gallery wall pop, I also wanted a mix of photography and illustration. This blend feels harmonious but it also allows each print to stand out individually as well.

Tip: Stuck for a colour theme? Picking an accent colour from a piece of furniture or curtains can be a great starting point. Or if you are starting from scratch, use a colour wheel to find complimentary (colours next to each other) or contrasting shades (colours opposite each other) colours to really make a statement!

Preparations

Installing can be a bit daunting, especially if you have an irregular shape. It’s really helpful if you have a second person to help you out! I used a spirt level and a measuring tape to make sure everything was straight as we went along. Check, check and check again! It’s also helpful to have a photo for reference of your prints in the order that you want. I just placed them on the floor and left a two centimetre gap between them then snapped a quick pic. This helped us see the end result I was thinking and it allowed us to better communicate through the process.

Tip: Have a second pair of hands. Ask them to hold the print against the wall and measure everything before nailing or sticking to the wall. It also helps to step back and check you are happy with the height and positioning.

Time to put the prints up!

First I held the frame against the wall and used a pencil to make a tiny dot on each side once the print was in position. To attach my prints to the wall we used command strips. We didn’t peel the tape until we knew it was level and in the right spot. For my layout it was easiest to start with the top right print and build around it. I held both the top right and bottom right posters against the wall to get the right vertical height. Then when I was happy, we stuck it down and used those measurements to build the rest of the gallery wall around it. As I had measured it all on the floor before hand I knew how far apart to make everything. In total it took about an hour to install.

Ta Da! The Finished Result

I’m just so pleased with my Gallery Wall. It really has changed the interior of my bedroom and made it feel more cohesive in design and a more cosy and lived in space. I find the prints really calming and I can’t help but smile every time I look at it. This was such a fun project to put together. If you find your walls are feeling a bit bare. I highly recommend creating your own gallery wall. You will be amazed at the transformation.
